PVC vs PPR Pipes: Which Is Better for Your Project?

White PVC pipes and green PPR pipes with fittings

Contractors ask us this almost every week. PVC and PPR both do their job well — the difference is temperature, jointing method and where in the building the line runs.

What PVC does best

PVC is rigid, affordable and widely available. It is the standard choice for cold water supply, waste lines and soil pipes. Joints are made with solvent cement, which is quick to work with on site.

  • Cold water supply
  • Waste and drainage lines
  • Conduit and external runs (where protected from sunlight)

What PPR does best

PPR handles hot water. Joints are heat-fused, which produces a continuous, leak-resistant line that can be buried in walls and screed with confidence — the main reason it is used for concealed pipework.

  • Hot and cold water supply
  • Concealed wall and floor pipework
  • Water heater connections

Cost, tools and skill

PVC needs only a cutter and solvent cement. PPR needs a fusion welding machine and a plumber who knows the correct heating times. On a small repair, PVC wins on convenience; on a full building, the durability of fused PPR on hot lines is worth the extra step.

A practical combination

Most projects we supply use both: PPR for pressurised hot and cold supply inside the building, PVC for waste, soil and drainage. Buying both from the same supplier keeps sizes and fittings consistent.
