5 Things to Consider Before Buying Bathroom Fittings

Bathroom fittings are bought once and lived with for years. These five checks come up again and again with customers, and they make the difference between a bathroom that ages well and one that needs redoing.

1. Pick one finish and stay with it

Chrome, matte black, gold or brushed steel — choose one and carry it through the taps, shower, towel rail, tissue holder and mirror frame. Mixing finishes in a small bathroom is the fastest way to make good products look cheap.

2. Know your water pressure

Rainfall shower heads and wide-spread mixers need decent pressure to perform. If your supply comes from a low overhead tank, either raise the tank, add a pump, or choose fittings that work well at low pressure.

3. Measure before you buy

Check the tap hole spacing on your basin, the rough-in distance for the WC, and the clearance around a bath or shower cabin. Bringing your bathroom dimensions to the store saves a return trip.

4. Ask about spare parts

Cartridges, seals and flush mechanisms are the parts that eventually wear. Choosing common, well-supported models means a simple replacement later instead of changing the whole fitting.

5. Buy the set together

Sourcing the WC, basin, shower and accessories at the same time keeps the finishes matched and the delivery in one trip — and it usually gives you a better overall price on the package.
