How to Choose the Right Water Heater for Your Home

A water heater is one of those purchases people rush and then regret. The right unit depends on how many people use hot water at the same time, where the heater will be mounted, and how steady your power supply is. Here is how we help customers decide.
Instant heaters vs storage heaters
Instant (tankless) heaters warm water as it flows through, so there is no waiting and no stored tank taking up space. They suit single bathrooms, kitchens and small apartments.
Storage heaters hold a tank of heated water, which is better when several outlets are used at once — a family bathroom plus a kitchen, for example, or a guest house with multiple rooms.
Match the size to the household
Capacity should follow real usage, not guesswork.
- One bathroom, one or two people: a compact instant heater is usually enough
- Family home with two bathrooms: a storage heater of moderate capacity
- Guest house, hotel floor or salon: larger storage capacity, sometimes more than one unit
Check your power supply and wiring
Higher-wattage heaters heat faster but draw more current. Confirm that your cabling, breaker and generator (if you use one) can carry the load before choosing a model. An electrician's confirmation at this stage saves a lot of trouble later.
Think about the installation position
Mount the heater close to the outlet that uses hot water most. The longer the pipe run, the more heat is lost on the way. Leave clearance around the unit for servicing and make sure the wall can carry the weight of a filled tank.
