How to Choose the Right Toilet for Your Bathroom

A water closet is a long-term fitting, and the wrong choice shows up daily. Four things decide whether a toilet suits your bathroom.
One-piece or close-coupled
One-piece units have no seam between tank and bowl, so they are easier to clean and look sleeker — the usual choice for modern and premium bathrooms. Close-coupled units are more economical and easier to move and service.
Check the rough-in distance
This is the distance from the finished wall to the centre of the waste outlet. Buying a WC that does not match your rough-in means either chipping the floor or fitting an offset connector. Measure first.
Flush type and water use
Dual-flush cisterns let you use less water for liquid waste, which matters where water is tanked or pumped. Check that the flush valve is a common type you can replace locally.
Seat, height and comfort
A soft-close seat avoids slamming and lasts longer. Comfort-height bowls are easier for older users. Check the seat is a standard shape so replacements are easy to find.
